Most recreational runners make the same mistake: they run too fast on easy days and too slow on hard days. The result is a grey zone of medium-effort running that builds fatigue without optimally developing either aerobic base or speed. Understanding your pace — and what different pace zones mean — is the first step to training smarter.

What Is Running Pace?

Pace is the amount of time it takes you to cover one unit of distance, expressed as minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mile). A pace of 5:30/km means you cover one kilometre every 5 minutes and 30 seconds.

Pace and speed are the same measurement expressed differently. A 5:30/km pace = 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h. Runners think in pace because it directly translates to race planning: if you know the distance and your target pace, you know your finish time instantly.

Zone 1 — Very Easy (Recovery): Extremely relaxed running. Conversational, no breathlessness. Used for recovery days between harder sessions. Most beginners never run this easy — and it's a mistake to skip these sessions.
