Area Measurement Conversions — When They Come Up
Area is a two-dimensional measurement expressed in squared units. The most common unit for everyday use is the square metre (m²), used for room sizes, property floor plans, and garden areas. Larger land areas are measured in hectares (1 hectare = 10,000 m²) or square kilometres. Smaller areas in construction and crafts may use square centimetres or square millimetres.
Property and real estate: floor plans are stated in square metres . A typical studio apartment might be 35–55 m². A two-bedroom flat 65–85 m². A small freestanding house 100–140 m². When comparing properties, the price per square metre (purchase price ÷ floor area) is the most useful standardised metric. Similarly, rental rate comparisons use monthly rent ÷ m².
Land area: agricultural land is measured in hectares . A standard suburban plot is typically 500–1,000 m² (0.05–0.1 hectares). A smallholding is commonly 1–20 hectares. A commercial farm might run 100 hectares to several thousand. Property transfer documents and municipal records always state land extent in m² and hectares.
Imperial area units: square feet (ft²) are used in the US and sometimes appear in imported materials, American real estate listings, or architectural drawings from international firms. 1 m² = 10.764 ft². So a room described as 200 ft² is approximately 18.6 m². Acres (the imperial large-area unit) are still referenced in some older deeds and in UK contexts — 1 acre = 4,047 m² = 0.405 hectares.
For tile, paint, and floor covering calculations that use area measurements, see the dedicated Tile Calculator and Paint Calculator on CalForge, which handle area as part of a more complete project quantity estimate.
How to Calculate Area
Area is the amount of two-dimensional space inside a shape. The formula depends on the shape: for rectangles, multiply length by width. For circles, multiply π (3.14159) by the radius squared. For triangles, multiply base by height and divide by two.
Area calculations are used for flooring, painting, land measurement, construction, and fabric. Always measure in consistent units — mixing metres and centimetres in the same formula gives wrong results.
