How to Calculate Tiles for a Floor or Wall

The calculation divides the total area (length × width) by the area of one tile. For example, a room 4 m × 3 m = 12 m². A 60×60 cm tile covers 0.36 m². So you need 12 ÷ 0.36 = 33.3 tiles — rounded up to 34. Add your waste percentage on top of that. At 10% waste, you'd order 38 tiles. At 15%, you'd order 40.

Waste allowance is critical and often underestimated. Even a straightforward rectangular room requires cuts at the perimeter. A typical 10% waste allowance is the minimum for a simple square or rectangular layout. Diagonal patterns (tiles laid at 45°) require 15–20% extra due to the additional cuts at every wall edge. Complex rooms with alcoves, columns, or curved walls may need 20% or more. It's always better to over-order slightly — running out mid-project and finding a matching batch is difficult, since colour and texture can vary between production runs.

Batch numbers matter. Tiles from different production batches can have visible differences in shade, texture, or size (within tolerance). When ordering, ask your supplier for tiles from the same batch, and always keep a few spare tiles after the job is done. These are invaluable if a tile cracks or chips during the lifetime of the floor.

For walls, the same calculation applies but with height × width instead of room length × width. Subtract the area of doors and windows (roughly 2 m² per standard door, 1.5 m² per standard window) to avoid significant over-ordering on a kitchen or bathroom wall.

Grout joint width affects the visual result. Larger tiles (60×60 and above) typically use 2–3 mm joints. Smaller mosaic or terracotta tiles may use wider joints of 5–10 mm. Your tiler or tile supplier can advise on the appropriate joint size for the specific tile you've chosen.

How to Calculate Tiles Needed for Any Space

Tiles needed = Area to cover ÷ Area of one tile, plus a 10-15% waste allowance for cuts, breakages, and pattern matching. Always round up to the nearest full box, and order from a single batch to ensure colour consistency.

For rooms with complex shapes, divide the floor into rectangles, calculate each area separately, then add them together before adding waste allowance. Account for features like shower bases, built-in cabinets, and hearths that reduce the tiled area.
